Saturday 8 September 2018 MARTIN BENNETT'S OLD GREEN RIVER BAND

A distinctive sounding 6/7 piece band. Has been described as a cross between New Orleans jazz and R+B. Certainly very rhythmic with Martin on keyboard and leader of the band. Widely travelled in the UK and Europe. Martin always has very capable and interesting musicians with him. In recent years he has included the very talented young  Alex Clark on Clarinet and saxes and she will be with us again on this occasion. Hopefully their long standing reeds player, Howard Murray, will be fit again to play. He was poorly last year.

Saturday 13 October 2018 LAZY RIVER JAZZ BAND + BRIAN CARRICK

This is a Carlisle based band run by Chris Perrin. Roa Island regulars will remember Chris as the pianist in Brian Carrick's band, replacing Gabriele Gad. Chris is a very capable musician and runs his own 7 piece New Orleans style band in which he plays clarinet and saxs. Other instruments in the band comprise piano, trumpet,guitar/banjo, drums, trombone, and sousaphone. The trumpet player is Chris's wife Veronica! who has transferred over to jazz from classical music. The other musicians are widely travelled and have played with well known New Orleans style bands. This is a long established band.

Brian Carrick is, thankfully, recovered somewhat from a very serious back condition and is starting to play again. His first actual gig is during Easter 2018. It is expected that he will gradually get back on stream and he has agreed to guest at our Lazy River gig. He will play as much as he feels comfortable with. The band is very glad to have him.

Saturday 10 November 2018 MATT PALMER'S EAGLE BAND

This band has evolved over the years and their 2017 performance at Roa Island was terrific. Matt is a star clarinet and sax player, brilliant on Sydney Bechet numbers like Petite Fleur. A  6 piece band, Matt surrounds himself with brilliant musicians including the startlingly effective young Julian Aldridge (Baby Jools)

Saturday 19 January 2019 ALAN BEECHAM'S BLUE DRAGSTERS

Fourth visit by Alan's Band. Settling in very well. Jazz and R+B. The band's title has evolved into Blue Dragsters. 'Blue Drag' is an iconic Django Reinhardt number from the 1930's.. Swinging gypsy jazz and very popular today with young audiences on the Continent and in the U.S.A. Google youtube if you want. This number is performed very well by Alan's band.

FRIDAY 15 February 2019 FROG AND HENRY QUINTET (5 PIECE) BOOK EARLY

This band is touring England 11 -25 February 2019 and we are very pleased to be included in the tour. This is what is now known as New Orleans Street Jazz and is actually performed on the street ( check Google Youtube) or in cafes, bars, clubs and at outdoor events. These are all young musicians age range 26 -35 and take the business very seriously indeed, studying recorded and sheet music. The music goes right back to the early days of the 20th century and even late 19 century including the music of Scott Joplin and other ragtimers, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Bunk Johnson, Banjo Ikey Robinson, Jimmy Noone and so on. Dancing was common in the original setting of this music.

The band is based in New Orleans but likes to travel. They have been well received in Switzerland, Turkey, Poland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Australia, Mongolia and London.

This is a cosmopolitan, multi instrumentalist, strings and brass band. Plenty of vocals:

1 F.H Henry. Stage name for Ryan Baer and the source of the strange name for the band. Belgium and N. America. Vocals, tenor banjo, archtop guitar
2 Euan Bleach. UK. Clarinet, various saxs,. piano and vocals
3 Dave Neigh. N. America. Tuba machine and, simultaneously, six string banjo or guitar
4 Coleman Akin. US. Violin, guitar, vocals
5 Laurent Habert. Germany. Clarinet and saxs

I believe this band will be popular with old and young alike. Strike a chord with everybody!
Saturday 9 March 2019

KEITH NICHOLS' HOT 5   BOOK EARLY

We are very happy to be putting on this band again especially after the dramatic last minute cancellation of their 2018 gig because of the worst weather in living memory. Three band members were actually snowed in at home in the midlands or the south!. As a consequence we had hoped to put them on in late 2018 but this didn't work out.

This band is a unique combination of personnel and material and always very popular at Roa Island. Includes Spats Langham of course. Very professional stuff and extremely good value with us.
